Celebrating 10 Years at R.E.A.L.

Each month, we’re celebrating one of our wonderful and dedicated team members who have worked at R.E.A.L. for ten years or more…

This month we’re focussing on Darren Coe, who has worked at R.E.A.L. since September 2010. Darren teaches Maths at GCSE, Functional Skills and Post-16 levels at our City Hub and Woodhouse Road sites.

Darren has specialised in working with vulnerable children and young people throughout his career. His working life started at PGL adventure holidays and camps for schools (he never talks about this!). Following this, Darren worked with young people with autism at the National Autistic Society, whilst also qualifying as a youth worker.

He then worked as a residential worker at a children’s home for a number of years before making the move to an educational setting, working in the School Inclusion Programmes (SIPs) for students with special educational needs prior to working at R.E.A.L.

Darren’s main interests are music, comedy, and films. He loves going to concerts and festivals (remember those?), and seeing live music and stand-up.

Two fun facts you might not know about Darren – he had his own show on a local radio station and he has attended a stand-up comedy course, which led to him performing live stand-up at the Leicester comedy festival with Phil Jupitus and Johnny Vegas.

We asked Darren to describe his typical day at R.E.A.L.: “My typical day involves collecting the student from home, taking the opportunity to chat with them in the car and helping them to prepare for the day ahead. Then it’s into the morning session, which involves teaching maths to a small group of students. The afternoon follows pretty much the same format!”

When asked about the best thing about his role at R.E.A.L., Darren said: “Every day can be different with its challenges but also its rewards. I’m looking forward to the next ten years!”

Finally, Darren wanted you to know that he is a Capricorn, likes walks in the park and his favourite food is pasta!

R.E.A.L. offers a wide range of benefits for staff and is an amazing place to work. We’re currently recruiting for a number of new and exciting vacancies. If you are interested in joining our supportive and dynamic team, please click here to visit our website.
