Focus on Nanpantan Hub

R.E.A.L. Education’s Nanpantan Hub is based at Whittle Hill Farm Buildings in Loughborough.

The friendly staff team at Nanpantan offer learners opportunities in maths, English and science in Functional Skills levels 1 and 2, and also at GCSE level. The hub also offers a wide range of AIM awards, horticulture groups (who access National Trust sites), an ICT group and a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) room. Learners also enjoy food technology sessions (working towards Level 1 and 2), and delicious smells often waft out of the kitchen! All these qualifications are available on a one-to-one basis and also within small learner groups at Nanpantan.

Learners at Nanpantan can access the local leisure centre for a wide range of sporting activities, including the gym, racket sports, swimming and fitness sessions. Recently Nanpantan have also increased their offering to include a BTec in sport.

The STEAM group at Nanpantan is lead by tutor Vicky Lane. Together with Learning Manager Kelly Jackson, Vicky has taken over the small barn that was otherwise unused and has repurposed it as the STEAM room. The room is a creative learning space where young people have a choice of activities, such as melting wax crayons on canvas for artwork, practical science experiments (like potato osmosis or fruit volcanoes), building robots and examining the inner workings of clocks, creating sculptures using 3D pens and the 3D printer, and sometimes just creative drawing and therapeutic colouring (often an essential downtime activity after a long week of learning).

The STEAM group at Nanpantan have also recently been planning to improve their outdoor area. The plans are currently in their early stages, (see the image above for information), and the team is very excited to bring them to fruition!

Kelly Jackson said: “We have a brilliant staff team at Nanpantan of around 18 people, with around 25 learners who access the facilities.

“Our busiest day is most definitely a Tuesday when we have both English and science groups on the go! Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are mostly our one-to-one learning days, and we have a lot of fun on Fridays with the ICT and STEAM teams. It’s always great to see what the learners are doing and it changes from one week to the next.”
