Fun on the R.E.A.L. Education Allotment

A R.E.A.L. Education learner and their tutor have proved that you really do reap what you sow! By volunteering to help maintain allotment plots for other people, they have managed to acquire an allotment plot of R.E.A.L.’s very own!

R.E.A.L. tutor Vickie Reid had been helping to maintain an allotment plot in Wilford village, a few minutes south of City Hub. They quickly got the plot up to standard, and looking for a new challenge, Vickie attended the allotment committee meeting to see if there were any other allotment plots in need of some help.

At the committee meeting, Vickie met a mum with a new baby. She was struggling to keep on top of her plot, so Vickie and her learner stepped in to help her to grow things easy and to make the space an enjoyable place to be. The plot harvested vegetables in August, much to the delight of the mum!

Vickie and her learner then spotted an overgrown plot on the allotments. After contacting the plot owner to see if they could help, they got a big surprise!

Vickie said: “The owner said that they were impressed with the work we have been doing on the other plots. They then asked if R.E.A.L. would like to have the plot as a R.E.A.L. Education community garden, giving other learners and staff members a chance to work on the allotments too!

“This will be a great outside space to engage learners and work as a team – it shows that hard work really does lead to wonderful things! There is even a plot holder that keeps bees and has offered to do a summer demonstration in beekeeping for our learners.”

RAPS Mansfield will became RIS Mansfield on 27th May. The new RIS website will be launching shortly.
