Student Spotlight – Roshan Chandy

Between September 2015 and December 2017, I attended REAL Education Ltd. Along with offering support in Functional Skills Maths and Work Skills, REAL set me up with an English tutor – Sarah Handcock – with the aim of developing my skills and portfolio as a film critic and writer.

An avid movie fan since as long as I can remember, I first fell in love with cinema when watching ‘Jurassic Park’ (1993) aged 5 while living in Bangkok, Thailand where my dad was working, at the time, for Save the Children. I first became interested in Film Criticism as a hobby through reading and watching the work of British Film Critic Mark Kermode. His encyclopedic knowledge of cinema inspired me to set up my own personal website ‘Rosho’s Reviews’ (now called ‘Roshan’s Reviews’) in 2016, where I reviewed any of the most recent movies I saw in the cinema.

In recent years, my obsession with the mechanics and critical faculties of Film has grown to such a point that I now visit the movie theatre 4-5 days a week in order to absorb, breathe and consume all the latest releases. These releases are both in cinemas and – increasingly in recent Covid times – on streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Curzon Home Cinema.

Working with Sarah – both at REAL and in private tutoring sessions since – has really opened up my critical eye as I am now fully aware of the “dos” and “don’ts” of review writing. Along with this, I have learned to support my critical analysis with evidence. For example, picking a key scene or snapshot from the film that backs up my point of view.

Along with writing up-to the-minute reviews of all the latest releases on my website, I am now a contributing reviewer for an ever-expanding list of publications. These include LeftLion, Movie Quotes and More and Cheer Full – a supplement of Middle Street Resource Centre in Nottingham.

I hope to continue this passion of mine well into the future. Both as a hobby and (hopefully) a career. To Sarah and REAL, I am eternally grateful…
